Tips & Tricks

V5.2 & V5.3 require ODBC connections

Did you know that ACCPAC Advantage Series V5.2 & V5.3 require an ODBC connection?

Pervasive software variations

There are several variations of the Pervasive software installation; it is important to clarify the type of Pervasive installation that is being used:

  1. Pervasive Server Engine: installs only on the server and is intended for use with the Pervasive Client on the workstations

  2. Pervasive Client Interface (not Engine): this software is installed on each workstation, when there is a dedicated network server running the Pervasive Server Engine.

  3. Pervasive Workgroup Engine: typically installed in a peer to peer setup, with one machine functioning as the server. In this situation, this server computer must be defined as a permanent Gateway.

In your ODBC Administrator, on the System DSN tab or the Drivers tab, you will see either Pervasive ODBC Engine Interface or Pervasive ODBC Client Interface, depending on your setup and software installed. As a general rule, the Client/Server installation is typically used in a larger implementation (ie: more than 5 users), while the Workgroup Engine is typically used in a smaller installation.

Connectivity Requirements

There is a requirement for reporting purposes in Advantage Series 5.2 and 5.3 that Pervasive databases use ODBC connections for connectivity to the data.  This is a difference from previous versions of Advantage Series and in most instances it is taken care of by the ACCPAC function Database Setup.

Database Setup in the System Manager handles the setup of the Engine and Client Interfaces behind the scenes when new database IDs are created.  However, if you are upgrading from a previous version of ACCPAC for which your database IDs are already created, the appropriate ODBC connections may need to be created manually.

Solution

The simplest way to generate these ODBC connections, for existing database Ids, is to open the ID for editing in the ACCPAC Database Setup and click the Ok button to approve the path.  This should force the creation of both the proper Client and Engine Interfaces.  There are some cases in which the Engine Interface may not be properly generated when using this method.  If you would like detailed instructions on how to setup both the Client and Engine Interfaces manually on Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro operating systems please email Connie at chope@stonefield.com

How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb?

Border Collie: Just one. Then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.
Rottweiler: Make me!
Lab: Oh, me, me! Pleeease let me change the light bulb! Can I? Huh? Huh?
Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!
Malamute: Let the Border Collie do it. You can feed me while he's busy.
Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls.
Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?
Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.
Mastiff: Screw it yourself! I'm not afraid of the dark...
Doberman: While it's out, I'll just take a nap on the couch.
Boxer: Who needs light? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.
Pointer: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there!
Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb?
Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle...
Old English Sheep dog: Light bulb? That thing I just ate was a light bulb?
Basset Hound: Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
Westie: Dogs do not change light bulbs -- people change light bulbs. I am not one of THEM so the question is, how long before I can expect my light again?
Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.
Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned-out bulb?
